Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on Friday, August 30, 2024, that he would vote against a proposed amendment in Florida to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution, which would overturn the current six-week abortion ban.

This statement came after Trump seemed to express support for the amendment in an earlier interview, causing confusion.

Trump clarified to Fox News, “I think six weeks, you need more time than six weeks,” but added that the amendment was too permissive. His stance is strongly opposed by anti-abortion groups backing his campaign against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election.

Kamala Harris criticized Trump, stating he boasts about overturning constitutional protections for abortion and supports a ban “so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant.” She emphasized that if elected, she would sign legislation restoring reproductive rights.

Abortion has emerged as a crucial issue leading up to the election, especially after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Recent polls show Trump losing support among women voters, with Harris leading by 13 percentage points among this demographic.
