A female passenger has died while six others sustained serious injuries in a road accident that occurred at New Castle Bus Stop, inward Gbagada, along the Oworonsoki–Apapa Expressway in Lagos.
The spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, March 8. He explained that the accident happened when a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY veered off the road and rammed into a roadside culvert along the corridor.
According to him, the force of the crash threw a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the expressway. In a tragic development, an approaching articulated truck could not stop in time and ran over the passenger who had fallen onto the road, resulting in her immediate death.
Six other occupants of the bus, including the driver, suffered varying degrees of injuries, with some reportedly sustaining multiple fractures from the crash.
Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service arrived at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for treatment, while personnel of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the body of the deceased from the scene.
Authorities said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
