
A devastating truck accident during an Easter procession in Billiri, Gombe State, has resulted in the deaths of five people, with eight others injured. The incident occurred when a trailer truck carrying grains from Adamawa State lost control due to brake failure, crashing into a crowd of Christian faithful and Muslim bystanders.
According to the Gombe State Police Command, two men and three women lost their lives in the accident. The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
The incident sparked violent protests, with aggrieved youths setting the trailer ablaze, looting shops, and storming the Billiri Divisional Police Headquarters. Police operatives responded swiftly to restore order, and security presence has been reinforced to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The police command has condemned the act of lawlessness and urged residents to remain calm, allowing the law to take its course. Commissioner Bello Yahaya extended condolences to the bereaved families and appealed for peace, lawfulness, and vigilance among the public.
