Troops from the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, have made significant strides in combating economic sabotage in the Niger Delta. Between December 23 and 29, 2024, the military conducted a series of operations that led to the dismantling of 20 illegal oil refining sites, the arrest of eight suspected oil thieves, and the recovery of over 90,000 litres of stolen petroleum products.

The operations, carried out across various locations in the region, also resulted in the deactivation of 21 boats used in illegal activities. Key discoveries included a large tarpaulin reservoir containing 37,000 litres of stolen condensates and a wooden boat in the Buguma area of Asari-Toru Local Government Area (LGA). In Ogajiama, located in the Buguma/Bakana region, troops engaged in a gun battle with criminals, dismantling more illegal refining sites and recovering 9,000 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK). Three suspects were arrested during the operation.

Further successes were achieved in Degema, Omoku, and Etche LGAs, where stolen petroleum products were recovered, and illegal refining equipment, including locally made ovens and boats, were destroyed. In Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom states, troops disrupted smuggling activities and uncovered vandalism attempts on a Shell Petroleum flowline.

General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, commended the troops for their dedication and vigilance. He called on local communities to assist in the fight against oil theft and economic sabotage by providing actionable intelligence. The ongoing efforts aim to secure the nation’s resources and ensure stability in the region, thereby supporting the growth of legitimate economic activities.
