In a decisive military operation, Nigerian troops have killed Aminu Kanawa, the second-in-command to notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed the operation on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, stating that Kanawa was neutralized by troops of Operation Fansan Yamma in the North-West.
The military also inflicted severe injuries on some of Turji’s closest associates, including his younger brother, Dosso. This offensive comes just days after the military eliminated Turji’s son and several of his fighters during a clearance operation on his hideout.
Major General Edward Buba, the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, provided an update on the military’s efforts, revealing that over seven of Turji’s key commanders, along with 24 of his fighters, were killed while fleeing their stronghold.
The DHQ reiterated its determination to capture or eliminate Turji, following his history of mocking the military and challenging them to battle. The terrorist leader had been declared wanted after the arrest of his associate, Bako Wurgi, in December 2024.
Among those killed in the latest operation were high-profile terrorists Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, and Bello Buba. Troops also eliminated another notorious terrorist, Suleiman, who was attempting to lead a reinforcement to rescue Turji’s camp.
The military described the offensive as a major blow to terrorist networks in the region, particularly those responsible for kidnappings and attacks in Zamfara and Sokoto states. The DHQ assured that operations would continue until all terrorist threats in the North-West were eradicated.
