Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Nigerian presidential spokesperson to ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has been laid to rest in his hometown, Iperu-Remo, in Ikenne, Ogun State.
Okupe, who passed away on March 7, 2025, at the age of 72, was honored at a funeral service held at Wesley Methodist Church, Nigeria, Iperu-Remo, on Friday.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State described the late politician as a fearless warrior who fought many battles in his lifetime. He praised Okupe’s commitment to public service, generosity, and advocacy for good governance.
“People should strive to live an impactful life,” Abiodun stated. “Life is temporary, and everyone must taste death. Okupe was a media guru, articulate and principled, never changing his stance unless out of personal conviction.”
In his sermon, the Methodist Archbishop of Egba-Yewa, Most Rev. Adegbemi Adewale, highlighted Okupe’s legacy of positive influence, stating that his contributions would continue to inspire future generations.
Dignitaries present at the funeral included members of the Ogun State Executive Council, former Ogun State Governor Sen. Gbenga Daniel, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, and journalist Tunde Rahaman, among others.
Okupe’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics and media, with many remembering him as a bold and articulate voice in national discourse.
