
Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, journalist, and politician Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. She died shortly after performing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences, calling Onwenu a “versatile and extremely gifted artiste” and highlighting her legacy through her music. He praised her for evoking a sense of fellowship and harmony with her iconic song “One Love.”
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who was present at Onwenu’s final performance, shared his heartfelt memories and condolences. He emphasized the lasting impact of her contributions to the entertainment industry and the nation.
Onwenu’s child, Abe Ogunlende, paid tribute on Instagram, thanking her for the life lessons and expressing a sense of continued connection even after her passing.
Actress Joke Silva recalled their last joyful moments together at the event, while actress Genevieve Nnaji and others like Femi Kuti, Charly Boy, and Patience Ozokwor expressed their sorrow and celebrated Onwenu’s remarkable legacy.
Onwenu’s illustrious career began in the 1980s, with her music blending highlife, pop, and gospel genres. Beyond music, she made significant contributions to film and television and held political positions, including serving as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and as the Executive Director/CEO of the National Centre for Women Development.
Her dedication to the music industry and public service was recognized with numerous awards, including the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Onwenu’s passing is a significant loss to the entertainment industry and her numerous fans worldwide, but her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
