Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed concerns over Nigeria’s deteriorating political, economic, and security situation. In a media chat, Obi stated that the country needs selfless and exemplary leadership in 2025.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges are visibly worsening, with the nation and its fortunes in clear reverse.

Obi highlighted the country’s rising poverty levels, with over 100 million people living in extreme poverty and more than 150 million experiencing multidimensional poverty.

He also noted that Nigeria’s economy has declined significantly, with the GDP decreasing from $574 billion in 2014 to approximately $200 billion today.

Additionally, the country ranks 143rd out of 163 nations in terms of peacefulness, with many communities displaced and living in IDP camps.

The former Anambra State Governor also criticized the government’s handling of food security, stating that Nigeria is one of the hungriest countries globally, with many citizens struggling to afford basic food items.

He further emphasized the need for urgent action to address corruption, official malfeasance, and fiscal profligacy, which continue to rise and hinder national development.

Obi also expressed concerns over the national debt, which has increased sharply from N15 trillion in 2015 to N100 trillion today, with most borrowings allocated to non-regenerative programs.

He emphasized the need for Nigeria’s leadership to prioritize the welfare and development of its citizens, ensuring that the country’s challenges are addressed through selfless and exemplary leadership.
