President Bola Tinubu has written to the Nigerian Senate seeking the confirmation of Olubunmi Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance. In a letter submitted to the upper chamber, Tinubu formally forwarded Oyedele’s name for consideration and approval by senators as part of ongoing efforts to fill key positions in his cabinet.
The move comes as part of the administration’s broader reshuffle and appointment process following recent changes in ministerial portfolios. Oyedele, a finance expert with experience in public and private sector economic matters, is being positioned to support the Minister of Finance in handling fiscal policy, budgetary matters, and economic reforms.
The Senate is expected to review the nomination through its committees before convening a plenary session to consider the confirmation. Lawmakers are likely to question Oyedele on his vision for Nigeria’s economy, strategies for revenue mobilisation, management of public finances, and plans to address inflationary pressures and economic growth challenges.
Supporters of the nomination say Oyedele’s financial background and previous roles make him well placed to contribute to national economic policy, particularly at a time when Nigeria is facing significant fiscal pressures, efforts to attract investment, and reforms in the finance and budgetary sectors.
Critics, however, may use the confirmation process to probe his credentials, past decisions, and plans, emphasising the importance of transparency and accountability in key government appointments. As the Senate deliberates Oyedele’s nomination, debates around economic priorities and governance challenges are expected to feature prominently.
