President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has officially designated the Arterial Road N20 from Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway, ONEX, as the Professor Wole Soyinka Highway in honour of the renowned Nobel Laureate’s significant contributions to African literature.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, a special adviser on Information and Strategy, the decision to name the road after Professor Wole Soyinka was based on his remarkable achievements in literature, being the first Nigerian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
President Tinubu expressed, “Soyinka was the first African to win the Nobel Literature Prize. He has brought honor and fame to Nigeria.” This decision was made following a recommendation by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, as mentioned by Onanuga.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration, led by Nyesom Wike, supported the proposal to name the road after the distinguished playwright, poet, and novelist, especially in light of Soyinka’s upcoming 90th birthday on July 13.
It is noteworthy that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, inaugurated several roads in Abuja to commemorate President Tinubu’s first anniversary in office, showcasing the ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure development in the capital city.
