In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu has approved the increase of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) monthly allowance to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024. This development is in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
The announcement was made through a statement by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations of NYSC, who acknowledged that the decision was communicated via a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, signed by its chairman, Ekpo Nta, on September 25, 2024.
The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government, noting that the increase would provide much-needed relief for corps members across the country. He stated: “This timely gesture from the Federal Government is not only a source of succour for our corps members but also serves as a morale booster, encouraging them to continue serving the nation with dedication.”
Prior to this increment, the monthly allowance for corps members was ₦33,000. The raise reflects the government’s effort to improve the welfare of NYSC members and aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance the national service experience.
