President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly expanded the list of candidates for the position of the next Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman.
Initially, the president was said to have a preferred candidate from the South West zone.
However, sources indicate that he was advised to review and reconsider his options, leading to the inclusion of candidates from other geo-political zones.
The issue of the zone from which the next INEC chairman would be appointed has become a sensitive topic amid allegations and political pressures.
As a result, the presidency has broadened the screening process to accommodate a wider range of candidates beyond the president’s original choice.
This development reflects the efforts by the government to balance regional representation and address concerns related to the selection of the INEC chairman, a key position in Nigeria’s electoral system.
