Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu is committed to alleviating their hardships, countering social media nicknames labeling Tinubu as “T-pain.” Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Onanuga addressed criticisms and defended Tinubu’s recent economic reforms.
“President Tinubu feels the pain of Nigerians and assures them that relief is on the horizon. Some have resorted to calling him ‘T-pain’ out of mischief, but he is not that. He’s here to heal, not to hurt,” Onanuga stated.
This reassurance follows widespread discontent surrounding policies such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, which have caused steep price increases in essentials like food and fuel. Despite the challenges, Onanuga maintained that these policies are part of a broader strategy aimed at economic stability.
“The President has never shied away from acknowledging that Nigerians are going through difficult times. He is working tirelessly to provide relief and ensure that the nation moves towards a future of prosperity,” he explained.
Although protests have erupted against these policies, which have particularly affected Nigeria’s middle class, Onanuga underscored the administration’s commitment to seeing the reforms through. He emphasized that the current pain is a necessary part of stabilizing and growing Nigeria’s economy in the long term.
“This is a painful transition, but it’s part of a long-term strategy to stabilize and grow the economy,” he added.
