
Social media giant TikTok has removed over 2 million videos in Nigeria between July and September 2024 for violating its community guidelines, according to its latest Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report. The report highlights the platform’s commitment to maintaining a safe digital environment.
A statement obtained by Punch on Tuesday , February 4, 2025, revealed that 99.1% of the flagged videos were taken down within 24 hours. TikTok emphasized that this move aligns with its global safety strategy, ensuring harmful content is removed swiftly before it reaches audiences.
“With over a billion users worldwide and millions of videos uploaded daily, TikTok continuously invests in advanced technologies to detect and assess potential risks,” the statement read. “With a proactive detection rate of 98.2% globally, the platform is now more effective than ever in addressing harmful content before users encounter it.”
Between July and September 2024, TikTok removed over 147 million videos worldwide, with 118 million taken down through automated systems. In Nigeria, 92.1% of deleted videos were removed before users reported them.
The report further identified the most common violations leading to content removal in Nigeria. These included: Sensitive and mature themes, with 99.4% of removals occurring before user reports; Regulated goods and commercial activities, such as fraudulent schemes and unauthorized trade of firearms or explosives, with 99.1% of removals happening preemptively; Mental and behavioral health concerns, with 99.9% of flagged videos removed before any user complaints, reinforcing TikTok’s commitment to shielding young audiences from potentially harmful content.
The platform reiterated its dedication to fostering a positive and secure online experience. “TikTok’s mission to inspire creativity and bring joy is underpinned by a strong commitment to user safety, well-being, and content integrity.
