The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Thursday, July 25, 2024 confirmed the death of three site workers following a building collapse at Arowojobe Estate in the Maryland area of Lagos, Nigeria.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed the incident in a statement provided to the News Agency of Nigeria. The collapse occurred at No. 13, Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate, Maryland, Lagos.

“The agency received a distress call regarding a collapsed building at the above address at about 3.49 am. This prompted the immediate activation of the agency’s response team to the incident scene at 3.58 am. It was discovered that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed,” he said.

Search and rescue operations began immediately, resulting in the recovery of three adult males who were confirmed dead. Two other male adults were rescued alive, and one adult male trapped under the rubble was also rescued.

The rescued individuals are currently receiving pre-hospital care at the location, with further assistance provided by the Lagos State Fire Service and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit. A combined team of LASEMA personnel, the fire service, and the Nigeria Police are working at the scene.

“All the six men were site workers. LASEMA’s excavator has been deployed to accelerate the search and rescue operations,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
