Three female students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture (JOSTUM), formerly the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria have regained their freedom after spending a week in captivity.
The students were abducted on February 25, 2025, while returning from a night study session on campus. Their release was confirmed by Shedrach Elum, spokesperson for the JOSTUM Students’ Union, who stated, “I have been reliably informed that [they] are back safely.”
In a video shared by HumAngle, one of the freed students expressed relief, saying, “We survived… I am back. I am traumatized.”
The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) also reported the development via a news flash on X, confirming that the students were rescued by the police.
In response to the incident, the university management had declared a one-week mid-semester break to address security concerns on campus. This was detailed in an internal memo titled “Security Situation on Campus”, issued a day after the abduction and signed by the university’s Registrar, Dr. John David.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, had earlier called for urgent intervention to secure the students’ release.
