Nigerian music star Tems has announced the cancellation of her highly anticipated concert in Kigali, Rwanda, citing the escalating tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).
The concert, scheduled for next month, was expected to draw thousands of fans from across East Africa. However, the growing conflict between the two nations has raised security concerns, prompting the singer to reconsider.
Taking to social media, Tems expressed her regret over the situation, stating:
“I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realizing that there is an ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo. I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way. I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected. Conflict is no joke, and I truly hope and pray for peace in this time.”
Her candid apology resonated with fans, many of whom appreciated her awareness and understanding of the situation.
Diplomatic relations between Rwanda and DR Congo have worsened in recent months, with increasing hostilities affecting travel, trade, and entertainment events. The escalating conflict has also led to concerns over safety in the region, with organizations, including the United Nations, temporarily relocating staff.
Despite the disappointment, many Rwandan fans expressed their support for Tems, commending her sensitivity to the crisis. A fan commented, “We understand her decision, and it’s great to see her speak out with empathy. Peace is what we all want.”
Tems has assured her fans that she plans to reschedule the concert once the situation stabilizes, reaffirming her commitment to maintaining a strong connection with her East African audience.
