Letsile Tebogo made history for Botswana at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by winning the 200m gold medal, becoming the first Olympic champion in the nation’s history. Tebogo set an African record of 19.46 seconds, making him the fifth fastest on the world all-time list.
In a closely contested race, Tebogo held off USA’s Kenny Bednarek, who took silver with a time of 19.62 seconds, and Noah Lyles, the 100m champion, who claimed bronze in 19.70 seconds—marking the fastest-ever time for a third-place finish.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Tebogo, who dedicated his win to his late mother, Seratiwa. Tebogo’s performance also highlights Africa’s growing presence in the sprinting world.
