The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the full restoration of the national grid following a partial disturbance that occurred at 15:09 hrs on Saturday, July 1.
In a statement on Sunday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the disturbance was likely triggered by the “unexpected tripping of three units of a power generating station,” which abruptly removed 313 MW from the grid. Mbah noted, “This sudden removal caused system instability that led to the loss of bulk supply to a section of the national grid.”
The statement detailed that the system disturbance is the third partial grid disturbance of the year, alongside one total disturbance. “The System Operator reacted to the sudden drop in generation, which led to a dip in frequency, by islanding a section of the grid, including the Ibom Power Station. This allowed continued supply to areas such as Uyo, Aba, Itu, Eket, and Calabar, even as other sections experienced outages.”
Restoration efforts commenced immediately, and by 21:57 hrs on Saturday, “the entire part of the grid affected by the incident was successfully restored,” according to the TCN.
Podiums News reported that the disturbance led to a nationwide blackout affecting states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. This follows previous incidents of grid collapse on February 4, March 28, and April 15 of this year.
