Northern senators have called for an immediate suspension of action on the proposed tax reform bills, citing concerns over their potential negative impact on citizens and businesses across the region. The lawmakers made the demand during a meeting convened to deliberate on the proposed changes to Nigeria’s tax framework.
Speaking on behalf of the senators, Senator Ali Ndume described the bills as premature and lacking adequate stakeholder consultation. He argued that the reforms could disproportionately affect economically disadvantaged regions, exacerbating existing inequalities. “The tax reform bills, as they stand, do not adequately consider the unique challenges faced by the northern states,” Ndume stated.
The senators emphasized the need for a more inclusive and transparent process in developing the tax policies. They expressed concerns that implementing the reforms without addressing underlying issues such as infrastructure deficits and economic disparity could lead to increased hardship for their constituents.
Another key concern raised was the potential impact of the reforms on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are critical to the economies of northern states. Senator Ahmad Lawan noted that imposing additional tax burdens on struggling businesses could stifle growth and lead to job losses. “We must ensure that any tax policy does not hinder economic development but instead promotes equitable growth,” he added.
The lawmakers also criticized the lack of clarity in the allocation of revenues generated from the proposed tax reforms. They called on the federal government to provide a detailed plan on how the funds would be utilized to benefit all regions equitably.
In response, the federal government has assured stakeholders that the bills are designed to boost revenue generation and reduce fiscal deficits while promoting accountability.
However, the Northern senators insist that the government must pause the process to allow for further dialogue and a comprehensive review.
This development adds to the growing debates surrounding the tax reform bills, which have drawn mixed reactions from various quarters, including business groups, labor unions, and civil society organizations.
As discussions continue, the senators have reiterated their commitment to protecting the interests of their constituents, urging the government to prioritize policies that promote economic inclusivity and regional balance.
