In a tragic turn of events, Atsi Kefas, sister to Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, was accidentally shot by a police escort during a gunmen attack on Thursday. The incident unfolded along Kente Road in the Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

According to reports by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication specializing in the Lake Chad region, the attack occurred while Atsi Kefas and her mother, Jumai, were traveling in the area. Gunmen ambushed their convoy, prompting an exchange of gunfire between security operatives and the attackers. In the chaos, a police officer assigned to protect the family accidentally shot Atsi while attempting to repel the attackers.

Security forces responded promptly, evacuating the victims with the aid of an air ambulance. Both Jumai and Atsi Kefas were safely rescued and taken to a hospital for medical attention. However, Atsi’s current condition remains undisclosed as of the time of this report.

The attackers fled the scene, abandoning their vehicle, which was later recovered by security operatives. Authorities also discovered an empty magazine and passenger luggage inside the vehicle.

The incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing Taraba State and other regions in Nigeria. Efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators, with officials emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures to protect high-profile individuals and citizens alike.

Further updates are awaited as investigations continue.
