A Chief Magistrate Court has remanded Shafi’u Umar-Tureta, a former Special Assistant to ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal, in Correctional Center custody for allegedly circulating falsehoods against the current Governor of Sokoto State, Nigeria, Ahmad Aliyu, and his wife on social media.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Umar-Tureta committed the alleged offenses on July 18, 2024. The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Abdurahman Mansur, stated that the charges contravene the penal code law. When the case was first mentioned on August 26, 2024, Umar-Tureta denied the allegations.

Chief Magistrate Fatima Hassan, presiding over the case, noted that the only document before her was the FIR. Recognizing the nature of the offenses, she instructed the Defense Counsel, Al’Mustafa Abubakar, to file a formal application for bail, as the initial oral application was objected to by the prosecution.

The case has been adjourned until September 18, 2024, for a hearing, with Umar-Tureta to remain in custody until then.
