Switzerland has reopened its embassy in Baghdad after a hiatus of 33 years, a move that reflects the improved security situation in Iraq following years of conflict. The Swiss Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that the embassy, which was closed during the 1991 Gulf War, is now operational once again.

The decision to reopen the embassy is part of Switzerland’s broader strategy to strengthen bilateral relations with Iraq. The statement from the Swiss Foreign Ministry highlighted Iraq’s role as a mediator and bridge-builder in the Middle East, noting, “In recent years, Iraq has repeatedly campaigned for peace and security in the region.”

The embassy aims to enhance diplomatic ties and explore economic opportunities, as Iraq’s energy resources and economic diversification present attractive prospects for Swiss companies. The statement added, “With its energy resources and economic diversification, Iraq offers interesting long-term export and investment opportunities for Swiss companies.”

This reopening signifies a significant step in the renewed engagement between the two nations, reflecting Switzerland’s commitment to fostering stability and cooperation in the region.
