The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the release of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari. This follows Kyari’s successful fulfillment of bail conditions set by the court.
“DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions and has since been released today,” stated Adamu Duza, the spokesman of the NCoS FCT Command, in a brief message.
In July last year, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted Kyari bail in the sum of N50 million. He, along with two of his siblings, faced charges for failing to declare assets to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The NDLEA had filed a 24-count charge against Kyari and his brothers, Mohammed Baba Kyari and Ali Kyari.
Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the bail ruling, stipulated that Kyari must provide two sureties with property worth N25 million within the court’s jurisdiction, among other conditions. Although Kyari has met these requirements, his release was also contingent on the developments in another case where he is being tried with four others for alleged involvement in illicit drug dealings.
Justice Omotosho also remarked that Kyari’s decision not to escape during the attack on Kuje Prison on July 5, 2022, when many inmates fled, demonstrated his willingness to face the allegations against him. The judge highlighted that the charges against Kyari are bailable, justifying the decision to grant bail.
Kyari’s siblings had previously been granted bail by the court.
