The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned Abiola Odutayo in connection with the death of 32-year-old Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, who was the co-founder of Bumpa.
The tragic incident occurred on March 4, 2025, sparking widespread public concern and demands for justice.
According to a statement by Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin on Saturday, Odutayo was charged on March 12, 2025, at Court 1, Tinubu, after being discharged from the hospital. She faces charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, leading to Opayele’s death.
“The court granted her bail, and the case has been adjourned until April 16, 2025,” Hundeyin stated.
The incident has drawn national outrage, with reports alleging that Odutayo failed to assist Opayele after the collision on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Lagos. Witnesses claim she refused to help the critically injured victim, reportedly citing concerns about staining her car. Further complicating the situation, bystanders struggled to secure medical attention for Opayele, as several hospitals allegedly refused to treat him.
Public outcry has intensified, with over 35,000 Nigerians signing a petition demanding a more serious charge, such as manslaughter, instead of reckless driving. Many have also called for the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to ensure a thorough investigation and proper prosecution.
The Lagos State Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to transparency and justice in handling the case.
