Supporters of Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, caused a commotion by singing the All Progressives Congress (APC) anthem, “On Your Mandate,” while detained in a police van.
Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I, was impeached on Monday over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power. The 52-year-old lawmaker had served as Speaker since 2015 and was on his third term before his removal. Following his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, was elected as his successor.
In a viral video, detained men claiming to be loyal supporters of Obasa and APC members from Agege Constituency expressed their grievances through the police van’s window shutters. One of the detainees stated, “We came down to the assembly to visit Obasa, and they arrested us. A tangible reason has not been given for apprehending us. We are about 20 people from Orile Agege. We are APC youths.”
The men, reportedly apprehended while loitering near the Lagos State Assembly complex, voiced their discontent while singing the campaign song associated with President Bola Tinubu.
The impeachment has drawn mixed reactions from Lagos residents and political observers, with some praising the Assembly’s decision to hold leaders accountable, while others view the move as politically motivated.
The Lagos State Police Command has yet to provide further details about the arrests or the charges against the detained individuals. Meanwhile, Obasa’s impeachment marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Lagos Assembly and raises questions about the political dynamics within the APC in the state.
