The Super Falcons of Nigeria have maintained their 36th position in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, as released by the world football governing body on Friday, August 16, 2024.

Despite their recent challenges, the Falcons continue to hold the number one position in Africa, with South Africa’s Banyana Banyana following closely behind.

This ranking comes after the Falcons’ underwhelming performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they finished at the bottom of their group, which included Olympic finalist Brazil, Japan, and world champions Spain. The Falcons lost their opening match 1-0 to Brazil and suffered a similar 1-0 defeat against Spain. Their campaign ended in disappointment with a 3-1 loss to Japan.

In contrast, Africa’s other representative at the Olympics, Zambia, saw an improvement in their ranking, moving up to 62nd place despite also losing all their group games.

Globally, the United States reclaimed the number one spot after winning the Paris Olympics, while Brazil moved up to eighth place and Spain dropped to third. The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024.
