A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated an explosive at a crowded marketplace in Kauri, a rural community in Konduga, Borno State, Nigeria around 9 pm on Wednesday, July 31.
The blast occurred at the night market, a hub of local activity, resulting in multiple casualties.
Local sources report that the bomb went off at a local tea joint where villagers gathered for evening chats. “We saw corpses of 19 people with an unspecified number of civilians injured,” a government official, who requested anonymity, told Daily Trust. The injured were quickly evacuated to an undisclosed hospital in Maiduguri for treatment.
This tragic incident follows the death of Shettima Mustapha, an accountant with the Local Education Authority in Damboa Local Government Area. Mustapha was killed after his vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu highway. Additionally, in June, at least six people were killed and many others injured in a bomb attack at a wedding venue in Tashan Mararaba, Gwoza town.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Daso, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Authorities have yet to release an official statement or confirm the total number of fatalities.
