Students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM) in Benue State, Nigeria have raised concerns over increasing insecurity on campus following the abduction of four female students by gunmen on Tuesday night.

The incident, which occurred between 8 pm and 9 pm at the North Core Hostels, has sparked fear among students, with many reportedly leaving the school premises to avoid potential further attacks.

In a strong reaction, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) blamed the abductions on inadequate security measures and the absence of perimeter fencing around the university.

Comrade Elum Shadrach, the Public Relations Officer of the SUG, criticized the university management and called on the Benue State Government and the Federal Government to intervene urgently.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the failure of the university management to provide adequate security despite repeated complaints from students. The negligence has now resulted in the kidnapping of our fellow students, leaving us vulnerable,” Shadrach said.

The union demanded an official response from the university management within 48 hours, warning that failure to address the security situation could lead to decisive action from students.

Another concerned student, Comrade Bunde Raphael Shamnenge, suggested a stay-at-home protest until the kidnapped students are rescued and concrete security measures are put in place.

“We demand a comprehensive investigation, an increased security presence on campus, and proper support for the families of the kidnapped students,” he stated.

Students are now calling for urgent intervention to prevent further attacks and restore safety on the campus.
