A tragic incident has occurred at Obada Grammar School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria, where a student named Monday Ariyo reportedly died after being subjected to intense disciplinary measures by his teacher. According to an activist named Adetoun, who shared details on Instagram, the student was ordered to perform 162 frog jumps and received 24 strokes of the cane for allegedly breaking a dustbin.

The sequence of events began when the teacher brought a dustbin into Ariyo’s class, warning students not to damage it. In response, Ariyo reportedly joked that the dustbin was bought with students’ money. This comment allegedly angered the teacher, who subsequently reported Ariyo’s behavior to the school principal. Following the principal’s directive, the teacher enforced the punishment, which involved the strenuous frog jumps and caning.

Tragically, Ariyo collapsed during the punishment. According to Adetoun, school staff delayed taking him to the hospital. By the time he was eventually brought to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, he had passed away.

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident, stating: “The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention and he died today (October 25).” She noted that an autopsy would be performed, and an investigation is underway.
