Steve Bannon, a key right-wing political figure and former senior advisor to Donald Trump, reported to a Connecticut federal prison on Monday to serve a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. Bannon was convicted of defying a subpoena to testify before the congressional panel investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
Bannon, 70, arrived at the prison with a defiant attitude, declaring, “I’m proud of going to prison today if it’s what it takes to stand up to Joe Biden.” Supporters, including pro-Trump lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene, gathered outside waving “Trump 2024” flags.
Initially sentenced in October 2022, Bannon’s imprisonment was delayed during his appeal. A federal appeals court upheld his conviction in May, and Judge Carl Nichols ordered him to start his sentence by July 1.
Bannon, who played a significant role in Trump’s 2016 campaign, previously faced charges for alleged misuse of funds in a border wall project. He received a pardon from Trump in 2021, leading to the dismissal of those charges.
