Stellantis, the automotive giant, is recalling 211,581 vehicles due to a software defect that could deactivate their electronic stability control (ESC) systems, posing a heightened risk of crashes. The recall affects the 2022 models of the Dodge Durango, Ram 2500, and Ram 3500.

Defective Anti-Lock Braking System

The issue stems from a malfunction in the anti-lock braking system, which leads to the failure of the ESC system. The ESC system is essential for maintaining control during emergency maneuvers, particularly on slippery surfaces. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) emphasized the increased risk of accidents, noting that ESC systems are crucial for preventing single-vehicle and rollover crashes.

Affected Vehicles

  • Ram 2500: Approximately 158,000 units
  • Dodge Durango: Over 53,000 units
  • Ram 3500: 524 units

Customer Notifications and Repairs

Stellantis will begin notifying vehicle owners in late July. Affected customers will be able to have their vehicles’ anti-lock braking systems updated at dealerships free of charge.

The company has yet to respond to CNN’s request for further comments.
