A tragic stabbing spree in Solingen, Germany, left three people dead and eight others injured during a festival celebrating the city’s 650th anniversary.

The attack, which took place on Friday evening, has raised concerns about potential terrorism, although authorities have yet to confirm a definitive motive. The attacker remains at large, with police detaining a 15-year-old who may be connected to the incident.

The assailant reportedly targeted victims’ throats in a deliberate and brutal manner, according to police official Thorsten Fleiss. With no clear link among the victims, Markus Caspers from the Duesseldorf public prosecutor’s office noted that terrorism could not be ruled out. The incident occurred in the Fronhof, a central market square where live music was being played.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the attack, urging for the swift capture and punishment of the perpetrator. The remainder of the festival has been canceled, and Solingen residents are mourning the tragic loss of life.

The incident has also sparked political reactions, with a far-right candidate seizing on the event to criticize Germany’s multicultural policies, although no direct connection to immigration has been established.

Authorities continue to search for the assailant while the community grapples with the shock and grief of the attack.
