Nigerian music continues to thrive on the global stage, as Spotify has revealed that royalties paid to Nigerian artistes in 2024 surpassed ₦58 billion. This figure, more than double the earnings of 2023 and five times higher than in 2022, highlights the commercial expansion of Afrobeats and other Nigerian music genres worldwide.

The revelation was made in Spotify’s 2024 Loud and Clear report, released on Thursday, which detailed the platform’s financial contributions to Nigerian artistes.

According to the report, the number of Nigerian musicians earning at least ₦10 million annually from Spotify has more than doubled since 2023 and tripled compared to 2022. This surge reflects the increasing global demand for Nigerian music.

Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to empowering Nigerian artistes.

“The incredible growth of Nigerian music, both locally and globally, is a testament to the talent and creativity within Nigeria, and we are proud to support its continued rise,” she stated.

Global Reach and Streaming Trends

The report also highlighted the global reach of Nigerian artistes, with first-time listeners discovering their music over one billion times on Spotify in 2024.

Additionally, more than 1,900 Nigerian artistes were featured in Spotify editorial playlists—an increase of 33% from 2023. A significant portion of the ₦58 billion in royalties came from international listeners, further cementing Nigerian music’s influence beyond Africa.

Spotify data also showed that:

• Global listeners spent over 1.1 million hours streaming Nigerian music.
• Users worldwide created approximately 250 million playlists featuring Nigerian artistes.
• Nigerian music exports have grown by 49% over the past three years.
• Local consumption of Nigerian content grew by 206% year-over-year, with a staggering 782% increase in the last three years.
