The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, has revealed that many people from the South-East migrated to Lagos ahead of the last general elections with the aim of voting in the state.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Mr. Agbaje addressed the challenges faced during the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection exercise in Lagos. He explained that in places like Oshodi-Isolo, a large number of new registrants were originally from the South-East.
He noted that instead of applying for a voter transfer from their original polling units, many of them went ahead to register afresh in Lagos.
According to him, those who used the official transfer process were able to receive their PVCs on time. However, those who attempted double registration were not issued their PVCs.
“In Oshodi-Isolo, we had a lot of people that migrated from the South-East just to vote in Lagos. Instead of being transferred from their area, what they did was fresh registration.
Those who did transfer got their PVCs. Those who did double registration unfortunately couldn’t get their PVCs,” Mr. Agbaje explained.
The INEC official’s comments come amid ongoing public discussions about voter registration, migration, and participation across different regions of Nigeria.
