South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described Russia as a “valued ally and friend” during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS summit held in Kazan on Tuesday. Ramaphosa emphasized Russia’s support dating back to South Africa’s struggle against apartheid, stating, “We continue to see Russia as a valued ally, as a valued friend, who supported us right from the beginning.”
In response, Putin affirmed that the relationship between Russia and South Africa is built on “strategic partnership, equality, and mutual respect,” and emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with African nations.
This summit comes amid Russia’s efforts to build alliances to challenge Western dominance. Despite South Africa abstaining from UN votes condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the country has called for an end to the conflict, initiating an African peace mission last year.
