Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his commitment to upholding the Nigerian Constitution amidst debates on the proposed establishment of a Sharia Court in Oyo Town. In a video shared by Tribune Online, Makinde affirmed that any initiative, including the Sharia Court, must comply with legal provisions.

Makinde stated, “I swore to uphold our laws and the Constitution of Nigeria. If their actions are within the law, fine, but if not, they should expect that I will insist the law must be followed.”

The announcement of the Sharia Court inauguration by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, Oyo State chapter, has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some welcomed the move, critics argued it undermines the cultural and religious diversity of the South West, predominantly inhabited by Yoruba people of varied faiths.

In response to the public outcry, the Khadimul Muslimeen of Oyo Kingdom, Imam Daud Igi Ogun, announced on Tuesday that the inauguration has been postponed indefinitely.

Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of ensuring all actions remain within the legal framework, signaling his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Oyo’s cultural and religious harmony.
