A senior official from the Nigeria Customs Service tragically passed away on Monday, June 25, after developing sudden health complications while attending an engagement at the National Assembly.

The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed out of respect for his family, was rushed to the National Assembly clinic where efforts by first aid responders to stabilize him proved unsuccessful.

Akintunde Rotimi, spokesman for the House of Representatives, confirmed the incident in a statement, expressing deep sadness over the loss. He said, “It is with deep sadness and regret that we confirm the passing of an esteemed official of the Nigeria Customs Service who was at the National Assembly for an engagement with a House Committee.”

Rotimi elaborated on the timeline of events, stating, “During the engagement, which occurred around 1.00 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the official developed sudden health complications. Despite the immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, he unfortunately passed away.”

In a gesture of sympathy and support for the family of the deceased, Rotimi emphasized that the official’s name would not be disclosed at this time. He conveyed condolences on behalf of the House of Representatives, acknowledging the deceased’s significant contributions to the Nigeria Customs Service and the nation.

“The House of Representatives stands ready to support efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and is cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to ensure all necessary protocols are followed,” Rotimi assured.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD., also expressed his condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of a dedicated public servant. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.”

Rotimi concluded by stating that additional information would be provided as it becomes available, while requesting patience and respect for the privacy of the family during their period of mourning.
