Suspended Nigerian Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken her case against Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the international stage, seeking intervention from global democratic institutions.

Speaking at the Women in Parliament session during the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the Kogi Central lawmaker decried what she described as an “unlawful suspension” from the Nigerian Senate.

Her suspension came just days after she submitted a petition against Akpabio, a move that has sparked controversy within Nigeria’s political landscape. Addressing the international assembly, Senator Natasha called for justice, claiming that her suspension was politically motivated.

Following her speech, she expressed concerns for her safety, alleging that powerful figures in Nigeria might attempt to detain her in New York as retaliation for speaking out.

Her case continues to generate discussions on the state of democracy and political accountability in Nigeria.
