Senator John Azuta-Mbata has emerged as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, succeeding Fidelis Chukwu in the leadership of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization.
The election, held at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu on Friday, marked a significant moment for the Igbo community as stakeholders and political leaders gathered to elect their new leader. Azuta-Mbata, a former senator representing Rivers East, becomes the 13th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, representing Rivers State.
In his inaugural address, Azuta-Mbata pledged to lead with inclusivity, fostering unity and growth among the Igbo people. “This is a pivotal moment for our people. I will ensure an all-inclusive leadership to achieve unity, progress, and prosperity across Igboland,” he said.
The Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma, expressed confidence in Azuta-Mbata’s leadership, assuring him of the governors’ support in advancing regional growth and economic integration.
Born in January 1960, Azuta-Mbata holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Ibadan. He was first elected to the Senate in 1999 during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and served until 2007.
His tenure as Ohanaeze President-General follows a lineage of leaders, including Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and George Obiozor, who have steered the organization through critical periods.
The event, attended by five South-East governors, political leaders, and cultural stakeholders, underscores the importance of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in championing the interests of the Igbo people. It also highlights the role of unity and strong leadership in addressing the region’s social, political, and economic challenges.
Azuta-Mbata’s leadership is expected to strengthen Igbo representation and foster collaboration among South-East states for collective progress.
