The Nigerian Senate has constituted a special committee to address contentious issues in the proposed tax reform bills.
The committee, led by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), was announced by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North) during Wednesday’s plenary session.
The committee’s mandate includes consultations with the Attorney General of the Federation, executive officials, and other critical stakeholders. The bills, originally submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on October 3, 2024, aim to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and align with the administration’s developmental goals.
However, the proposed reforms have faced widespread criticism from governors, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and lawmakers. The Senate leadership acknowledged these concerns and tasked the committee with providing recommendations before a public hearing.
The committee members include Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaya (APC, Kebbi North).
