The Nigerian Senate convened a solemn valedictory session on Tuesday to honor the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the National Assembly. The session marked the culmination of tributes to the senator, whose contributions to the legislative chamber were widely celebrated.
The casket containing Senator Ubah’s remains was prominently displayed at the foyer of the White House wing, directly opposite the Senate chamber. His seat was adorned with flowers and draped with a cloth in the colors of the Nigerian flag, symbolizing his service to the nation.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio led the session, wearing traditional Isi-Enyi attire paired with a red cap and dark sunglasses as a mark of respect. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also paid tribute in Isi-Agwu attire, reflecting the cultural significance of the occasion.
In his opening remarks, Akpabio said, “Today, we gather not only to mourn the loss of a colleague but to celebrate the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to the service of his people and this nation.”
The day’s agenda was deliberately limited to a single item titled “Valedictory Session,” emphasizing the gravity of the occasion. The session was attended by dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige, and former Senator Uche Ekwunife.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, led a delegation of House leaders in a solemn procession around the casket. The wives of principal Senate officers, including Ekaette Akpabio, Hajiya Jibrin Barau, and Oluyemisi Bamidele, were also present to pay their respects.
Speaking at the session, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described Ubah as “a passionate legislator whose voice resonated strongly in this chamber. His loss leaves a void that will not easily be filled.”
The late senator will be laid to rest on November 22, with various events planned to commemorate his life and service.
