The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Gboyega Akosile, has dismissed claims linking the governor to the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
Akosile, in a statement on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, described the rumors of the governor’s involvement as baseless, emphasizing that the impeachment was strictly a legislative matter.
“No, no, no. There is absolutely nothing true about that. The governor does not have a hand in it. It was purely a legislative matter,” Akosile clarified during a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He added, “The governor is focused on serious matters and busy taking care of over 20 million Lagosians. What happened in the Hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly was entirely the prerogative of the legislators. Like everyone else, the governor watched it unfold in the media.”
The Lagos Assembly impeached Hon. Obasa on Monday, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions, including the alleged withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers. His deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, was sworn in as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to hold the position in the state’s history.
In addition to the Speaker’s removal, the Assembly suspended its Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.
Hon. Obasa, who served as Speaker since 2015, is the second Speaker of the Lagos Assembly to be impeached in the Fourth Republic.
Akosile reiterated that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains committed to delivering good governance to Lagos residents and urged the public to disregard any unfounded claims of the governor’s involvement in legislative matters.
