Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the launch of 15 high-capacity, locally fabricated boats, a significant milestone aimed at transforming the state’s transportation landscape.
Speaking during the commissioning, Sanwo-Olu said “Today, I’m proud to announce the launch of 15 high-capacity, locally fabricated boats, marking a significant step towards revolutionizing transportation in Lagos State.”
This initiative, a partnership with Caverton Marine, enhances the state’s waterways and underscores a commitment to providing sustainable, efficient, and reliable transport options for all Lagosians.
“These new ferries, fabricated in partnership with Caverton Marine, are designed to carry 40 passengers each, doubling the capacity of our existing vessels. This project marks the beginning of a new era in water transportation, offering a faster, cleaner, and more comfortable commute,” the governor stated.
The deployment of these ferries is part of a broader strategy to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity between communities. “By saving hours lost in traffic, we are boosting economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life for our residents,” Sanwo-Olu added.
This initiative aligns with Lagos State’s THEMES+ agenda, which promotes pollution-free mobility and integrates an intermodal transportation system. The new ferries will operate on the Cowry Card payment system, ensuring seamless and efficient service for all users.
“We are not stopping here. An additional 25 high-capacity ferries will be fabricated in the second phase, further expanding our waterway routes and reducing turnaround times. These ferries are equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure safety, comfort, and convenience for all passengers,” the governor continued.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s unwavering commitment to enhancing its transportation system. “Our commitment to enhancing the Lagos transportation system is unwavering. With new patrol boats, a Search and Rescue Unit, and a floating clinic, we are ensuring that our waterways are safe and efficient,” he assured.
“Together, we are building a Lagos that thrives on innovation and sustainability,” Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded.
