Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum in Nigeria.
This decision follows the death of former Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu eight months ago.
Governor Sanwo-Olu announced his new role after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Alausa, which lasted over four hours. He noted that the forum’s leadership decision was unanimous among the six governors present.
Sanwo-Olu addressed the press, affirming the forum’s position against the agitation for Yoruba Nation. He also assured that the forthcoming federal minimum wage announcement would align with true federalism principles. “The forum unanimously agreed on this position, reflecting our commitment to a unified approach on critical issues affecting our region,” he stated.
Additionally, the South-West Governors’ Forum reaffirmed its support for state police and adopted “Ise Wa Fun Ile Wa” as its anthem. The forum urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the rehabilitation of federal roads nationwide and praised federal lawmakers for the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission bill aimed at enhancing economic growth and food security in the region. “We advocate for the swift passage of this bill to fortify our developmental agenda,” Sanwo-Olu emphasized.
The meeting was attended by Governors Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Senator Ademola Adeleke of Osun, and Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti.
