Sanusi Muhammadu has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano after receiving his appointment letter from Governor Abba Yusuf on Friday, May 24, 2024
The reinstatement ceremony took place at the Government House in Kano, marking his return to the throne four years after he was deposed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other top dignitaries attended the event, which followed Governor Yusuf’s signing of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law. The new law overturns the 2019 legislation that split the Kano Emirate into five separate entities and led to Sanusi’s deposition.
Sanusi’s reinstatement reestablishes the traditional singular Kano Emirate, dissolving the additional emirate councils created by the previous administration. The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, known as Lamido Sanusi before becoming emir, now resumes his role as the Emir of Kano.
