In an unprecedented escalation, Russia launched 188 drones into Ukraine between Monday night and Tuesday morning, targeting critical infrastructure as winter grips the region. Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 76 drones, while another 95 were neutralized mid-flight, likely through electronic countermeasures. However, five drones veered into Belarusian territory.
Russia also fired four Iskander-M ballistic missiles during the operation, none of which were intercepted, Ukrainian forces confirmed.
Damage to Vital Infrastructure
The Ukrainian air force noted that the assault caused significant damage to essential infrastructure, as well as private homes and apartment complexes. Serhii Nadal, head of the regional defense administration in Ternopil, confirmed damage to energy facilities in the western city.
Escalation in Drone Attacks
This latest assault marks the most significant drone campaign by Russia, surpassing the previous record of 145 strikes set on November 10. The attacks are part of a broader strategy to disrupt Ukraine’s energy systems during the harsh winter months, with temperatures already below freezing.
Russia’s Claims
In a separate statement, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have downed 39 Ukrainian drones in various regions of Russia on the same night. The ministry reported no casualties or damages resulting from these incidents.
Winter War Tactics
Russia’s intensified drone and missile strikes aim to undermine Ukraine’s resilience by targeting critical infrastructure, particularly energy systems, as temperatures are expected to remain severe until early spring.
This latest escalation underscores the continued volatility of the conflict as both sides prepare for a challenging winter ahead.
