British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been officially charged with multiple sexual offences, including rape, indecent assault, and oral rape, following allegations made by four women. The offences are said to have occurred between 1999 and 2005.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the charges come after a lengthy investigation that began in 2023 following a joint exposé by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches. The investigation uncovered several serious allegations against the 49-year-old entertainer. Brand, however, has consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing the accusations as “very, very hurtful” and claiming all his relationships have been “always consensual.”

In a statement on Friday, the police confirmed that they had written to Brand, informing him of five charges. These include one count of rape in Bournemouth in 1999; one count of indecent assault in Westminster, London, in 2001; one count of oral rape and one of sexual assault in Westminster in 2004; and another count of sexual assault in Westminster between 2004 and 2005.

Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the decision to charge Brand followed a careful review of the evidence gathered during the police investigation. “We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault,” she said. “These relate to reported non-recent offences between 1999 and 2005, involving four women.” She also emphasized the importance of preserving Brand’s right to a fair trial, warning the public to refrain from sharing commentary or information that could prejudice legal proceedings.

Brand has been summoned to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2. However, he is currently believed to be in the United States. In such cases, prosecutors may attempt to arrange the suspect’s voluntary return. If that fails, extradition procedures could be considered.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the police investigation, stated that the women involved are continuing to receive support from specially trained officers. He urged anyone affected by the case, or who has relevant information, to come forward. He also shared contact details for a dedicated email address and mentioned that support is available through the independent charity, Rape Crisis.

Brand rose to fame in the early 2000s as a stand-up comedian and TV host. He became a household name after presenting Big Brother’s Big Mouth, which launched his television career. He later went on to host major award shows and landed film roles in Hollywood, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.

However, Brand’s career has long been marred by controversy. In 2008, he was fired by the BBC after making inappropriate prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs. In recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, he reinvented himself as a social commentator and wellness influencer, gaining a large online following while frequently promoting conspiracy theories and challenging mainstream narratives.
