The Rivers State House of Assembly in Nigeria has expressed full support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, citing prolonged political unrest.

In a statement on Tuesday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule blamed the crisis on suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of “despotic and tyrannical actions,” including disregarding court rulings and obstructing the legislative arm of government.

“The governor’s actions, as confirmed by the courts, have unconstitutionally hindered the Rivers State House of Assembly from functioning,” Amaewhule stated.

While acknowledging that the declaration was not what they had initially hoped for, the Assembly pledged to abide by it, urging residents to remain calm as the President’s appointed Sole Administrator assumes control.

“The Rivers State House of Assembly pledges its full support to the Sole Administrator and will provide any assistance required to restore stability and effective governance,” Amaewhule added.
