The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued an arrest warrant for the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), after he failed to appear before the House within the 72-hour ultimatum given to him.
The warrant was issued on Monday during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule. The Assembly had summoned Enebeli to explain the annulled October 5, 2024, local government elections in the state. However, he did not honor the invitation.
Enebeli had recently scheduled fresh local government elections for August 9, 2025, in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling that nullified the previous polls.
Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara had invited members of the Assembly for dialogue over the implementation of the Supreme Court’s verdict.
The Supreme Court had earlier ruled against Fubara’s challenge to the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led Assembly, ordering it to resume legislative duties. It also barred federal agencies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation, from releasing funds to the Rivers State government until it complies with the court’s directives.
